Prior to creating Hyax, we used Wordpress extensively, and our biggest complaint was that plugins kept breaking, our sites kept going down, and things like updating PHP were things we had to handle.
WordPress is a widely-used open source (CMS) known for its flexibility and customization options. It's known for being free, but with that comes a lot of issues and headaches. If you need the most customization over your website, then Wordpress will give you that power to create any kind of website you want.
However, because its a software you have to maintain and install on your own, it can cause a lot of issues if you don't know how to maintain your own servers, updates, and plugins. In fact, most companies have to hire an in-house developer just to maintain their Wordpress installs OR hire a company that manages your Wordpress for you. All of this means your site will cost a lot more, even though Wordpress itself is "free."
If you need the highest level of customization, then Wordpress is probably for you. But for 99% of creators, we don't think Wordpress adds enough. In fact, it's generally a huge headache.
